Gas Phase Reactions of Fluorine Atoms

Abstract: The rate of reaction of F atoms with a series of compounds, CH4, CH3F, CH2F2, CHF3, CHClF2, HCl, CBrF3, NH3, and PH3 has been determined relative to the chemiluminescent reaction[Formula: see text]by photometry. The fluorine atoms were produced in a flow system from the fluid mixing of molecular fluorine and nitric oxide diluted with argon.

“…Most of the determined rate constants show good mutual agreement with a deviation of about 1.2. However, they are significantly lower than the values of 1.83 Â 10 À11 and (9.8 ± 3.2) Â 10 À12 cm 3 molecule À1 s À1 given by Pollock et al [8] and Nielsen et al [6], respectively. The kinetic studies of reaction CF 3 H + F ?…”

“…The experimental rate constants for the reaction of CF 2 H 2 + F ? HF + CF 2 H (R1) were measured around room temperature [4][5][6][7][8] and in the temperature range of 182-298 K [9]. Most of the determined rate constants show good mutual agreement with a deviation of about 1.2.…”

“…In a survey of the ultraviolet chemiluminescence of free radicals produced in F-atom reaction systems, Schatz and Kaufman [14] reported observation of the OH A-X emission in'the F + H20 reaction, of the NH A-X emission in the F + NH 3 reaction, and of the emissions of such species as CH, C 2, CF, and CF 2 on reaction of F atoms with hydrocarbons. The emission from electronically excited FNO has been used by Pollock and Jones [15] to study the rate of reaction of F atoms with other compounds relative to that with NO.…”
