Gas–Solid Reduction Behavior of In‐flight Fine Hematite Ore Particles by Hydrogen

Abstract: The ironmaking processes that directly use the raw materials of iron ore fines have more advantages on the aspects of environmental protection and energy conservation. In this work, the gas–solid reduction behavior and kinetic mechanism of the in‐flight fine hematite particles in hydrogen atmosphere are studied with a High‐temperature Drop Tube Furnace (HDTF). The experiments are carried out at 1450–1550 K. The particle size is 53–64 µm and the reaction time is 0.65–1.93 s. With the morphological observation, … Show more

“…With the gradual depletion of high-quality lump iron ore resources around the world, the efficient use of fine ore resources obtained after mineral processing has received wide attention in the iron-making industry [1][2][3][4]. Getting rid of the process of sintering and agglomeration, the direct reduction process using iron ore fines directly has many advantages such as high efficiency, energy saving, and environmental protection.…”

“…On the basis of thermodynamics, since water vapor is the substance produced by the reduction reaction, the large amount of water vapor will cause Delta G of the reaction to increase, and the tendency of the forward reaction to decrease. In terms of kinetics, since the viscosity of water vapor at the same temperature is greater than that of hydrogen, this will cause the gas diffusion coefficient of the gas reactant to decrease, making gas mass transfer difficult [27][28].…”

“…Nowadays, the gas–solid reduction technique is widely applied in ironmaking processes, in order to produce directly reduced iron (DRI) or so-called sponge iron for special steel production [ 29 , 30 , 31 , 32 , 33 ]. In this process, iron oxide (Fe 2 O 3 ) is directly reduced with H 2 and/or CO to metallic iron, via intermediate reaction products (magnetite and/or wűstite) at relatively low temperatures.…”
