Gas Storage Caverns in East Yorkshire Zechstein Salt: Some Geological and Engineering Aspects of Site Selection

Abstract: Natural gas has been stored in underground salt cavities i n the UK since 1979: for 'peak shaving' purposes to supplement demand from the high pressure National Transmission System. Solution mining of the salt cavities began i n 1974. This existing facility is known as the Hornsea Installation and is located on the East Yorkshire coast.Seismic analysis has indicated that several potential sites previously thought to have been acceptable are now considered as unsuitable for cavern development but the identifica… Show more

“…at wells 36/23-1, 41/10-1, 42/09-1, 43/06-1, 44/06-1 and 44/07-1). In the UK onshore, basinal polyhalites are recorded in the Great Hatfield 1 well (location shown in Knott and Cross, 1992), 4 km north of West Newton oil field (Quirk and Archer, 2022). The seismic response of these basinal polyhalites in the Stassfurt Halite connects with the shelf polyhalites which are slightly higher in the section, and form a distinctive wing-like geometry at the slope adjacent to the margins of the platform.…”
