Gastric Emptying Characteristics of a Novel 13C-Octanoate-labeled Muffin Meal

Abstract: The 350-kcal muffin meal OBT provides a convenient, nonscintigraphic way of measuring solid-phase gastric emptying. Multiple linear regression appears promising as a method of analyzing OBT data and may allow for an abbreviated breath test protocol.

“…Of note, no changes in gastric emptying could be detected using a 13 C breath test. Since 13 C breath test compares well with the gold-standard scintigraphy [3,5,7,8,23,32], especially for healthy individuals ( [11] and many other studies), our results exclude marked changes in gastric emptying upon HDT [31,35].…”

“…This study was carried out by a previously described, validated scintigraphic method for measuring gastric halfemptying time (15)(16)(17) and by the OBT described in several studies (1,(4)(5)(6)12). Gastric half-emptying from OBT curves was calculated by two mathematical models described above.…”

“…According to some studies, gastric half-emptying time of solids measured by OBT (T 1/2B ) correlates well with gastric half-emptying time of solids measured by scintigraphy (T 1/2S ) (1,(4)(5)(6)(7). Calculating T 1/2B is based on a nonlinear least-squares method in these studies.…”

“…A radio-labeled muffin was employed as a test meal for the 13 C-Octanoate breath test in this study (Chey et al 2001;Bromer et al 2002). The test meal was composed of 12.2 g protein, 68.9 g carbohydrate and 8.1 g fat with total of 400 kcal and was prepared immediately before each study.…”
