Gastro‐oesophageal resection and anastomosis for an oesophageal leiomyoma in a dog

Abstract: An 11‐year‐old female spayed golden retriever was presented for a second opinion regarding a recently diagnosed distal oesophageal mass. The dog had a history of chronic post‐prandial regurgitation. Physical examination and laboratory work yielded no significant findings. Thoracic radiographs revealed no significant findings other than equivocal cardiomegaly. A fluoroscopic barium swallow study and computed tomography scans of the chest and abdomen were performed, revealing an approximately 2.5 cm mass at the … Show more

“…The use of intravenous contrast agent also assisted in delineating soft tissue structures. The CT appearance of the mass in this horse corresponds relatively well with reports of human and canine oesophageal leiomyomas, which are reported to be homogenous, round or lobulated soft tissue masses that are typically poorly or non‐contrast enhancing (Chen et al, 2021; Jiang et al, 2013; Robin et al, 2018; Yang et al, 2001).…”

“…Radiography has previously been utilised in all reported oesophageal EMP case studies. A positive-contrast oesophagram 11 and a fluoroscopic barium study 1 have been used in the investigation of one case each. Barium oesophography is a low-cost and accessible imaging modality that provides information regarding the presence, size and location of an oesophageal mass.…”

“…Primary oesophageal tumours in dogs are rare, reportedly accounting for less than 0.08% of all neoplasms in this species. [1][2][3] The most common clinical signs include regurgitation and vomiting. Less common clinical signs include dysphagia, lethargy, anorexia, weight loss and salivation.…”
