Gastroblastoma in Adulthood—A Rarity among Rare Cancers—A Case Report and Review of the Literature

Abstract: Gastroblastoma (GB) is a rare gastric epithelial-mesenchymal neoplasm, first described by Miettinen et al. So far, all reported cases described the tumor in children or young adults, and similarities with other childhood blastomas have been postulated. We report a case of GB in a 43-year-old patient with long follow up and no recurrence up to 100 months after surgery. So far, this is the second case of GB occurring in the adult age >40-year-old. Hence, GB should be considered in the differential diagnosis of m… Show more

“…This unusual gastric tumor had a characteristic biphasic morphology, with sheets and nests of bland epithelioid cells and clusters of spindled cells, consistent with previous reports of gastroblastoma. Gastroblastomas are extremely rare, with 13 reported cases 1‐10 . They have been reported in patients ranging from 9 to 74 years of age (mean 31 years, median 27.5 years) with a nearly 1:1 female: male ratio.…”

“…Gastroblastoma is very rare neoplasm, originally described in 2009 by Miettinen and colleagues 2 . To date, 11 cases have been reported 3,4 . The patients have ranged in age from 9 to 74 years old (median 27.5 years) and affected men and women with equal frequency 2,3,5 .…”

“…Most patients have localized tumors at the time of diagnosis, but metastases have been reported. No deaths due to diseases have been reported 2–6 . Gastroblastoma is histologically distinctive and characterized by biphasic morphology inclusive of bland epithelioid cells in a nested architecture and clusters of monotonous spindle cells (Figure 2).…”
