Gastroduodenal diseases on the Jos plateau, Nigeria

Abstract: Two hundred and forty-three Nigerian patients referred for endoscopy at the Jos University Teaching Hospital in Nigeria were studied. Their overall mean age was 37.7 years (SD 12.7), among those with ulcers it was 38.4 years. The male:female ratio was equal in general, but among those with ulcers it was 2:1. Duodenal and gastric ulcers were found in 42(17.3%) and 12(4.9%) patients respectively, ratio of 3.5:1. There were 3 patients each with oesophageal and gastric carcinoma. “…Similar results with a higher prevalence of gastric than duodenal ulcer had been reported in northeastern Nigeria; 6 these findings contrast with other studies that have shown the opposite tendency. 5,18 A little under half had essentially normal endoscopic findings such as to suggest nonulcer dyspepsia although histology revealed features of mild to moderate chronic gastritis in nearly all participants.…”

“…Most available information relating to the epidemiology of duodenal or gastric ulceration has been derived from hospital studies, but such population-based data as exist suggest that the prevalence of peptic ulceration is on the order of 1 to 2% in unselected adults (25). A high prevalence of gastroduodenal mucosal lesions has also been reported from Sudan (10) and Nigeria (19), but there is older evidence that prevalence may be low in some other countries, and there may be differences between rural and urban populations (26).…”

“…The physicians commonly do a lot of upper gastrointestinal endoscopy 3,4,5 while the surgeons do more of the lower gastrointestinal tract 6,7,8 .We have encountered a some problems while beginning endoscopy in our setting Costs. It is by our standard still very expensive as it costs N15, 000 ($115) for upper GI endoscopy and is N17, 500 ($135) for lower GI endoscopy.…”
