Gastroduodenal intussusception caused by gastric gastrointestinal stromal tumor in adults: a case report and literature review

Abstract: Intussusception mostly occurs in childhood and is rare in adults. Although intussusception can occur in any part of the gastrointestinal tract, gastroduodenal intussusception caused by a gastric tumor is relatively uncommon in clinical practice. A PubMed search identified 24 published cases of gastroduodenal intussusception caused by gastric gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST); however, it is possible that we missed other cases not included in PubMed. Here we report a case of gastroduodenal intussusception c… Show more

“…Zhang et al . [ 7 ] reported a similar case and compiled a list of 43 documented cases of gastric intussusception secondary to gastric tumors, out of which 24 were GIST. It is worth noting that it is responsible for >50% of the documented cases of gastroduodenal intussusception.…”

“…Regarding location of intussusception in adult patients, the small bowel is generally affected more frequently than the colon and the most common types of intussusception are the ileocolic, the enteroenteric and the colocolic one [8]. On the other hand, the upper gastrointestinal tract is rarely involved with few cases of gastroduodenal intussusception being described in the literature [9]. Finally, even more rare is the colorectal [10] and the coloanal intussusception [11].…”
