Gastrointestinal Bleeding in Patients with Severe SARS-CoV-2

Abstract: Gastrointestinal symptoms are common and frequently reported in Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19), which is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). It is unclear if SARS-CoV-2 is associated with increased risk of gastrointestinal bleeding (GIB). Nevertheless, GIB in COVID-19 patients poses unique challenges to patients due to high-risk of concomitant respiratory failure and to endoscopy personnel due to risk of airborne transmission during endoscopic procedures. Many managemen… Show more

“…Patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 have an incubation period of 3-14 days with a mean period of 5 days (1,5,6). The most common symptoms of COVID-19 include fever, cough, fatigue, and bleeding (2,4,5,(7)(8)(9)(10)(11). “…The severity of their respiratory failure was far more responsible for the mortality risk than that of GIB. The deaths directly related to GIB was uncommon [4][5][6][7].…”

“…COVID‐19 predominately affects the respiratory system with pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and multiorgan failure. In addition to respiratory symptoms, non‐respiratory manifestations such as dysgeusia, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and abdominal pain are increasingly recognised 3‐5 . World Health Organization (WHO) initially declared the outbreak as a public health emergency of international concern on January 30, 2020, and eventually declared it as a pandemic on March 11, 2020 6,7 .…”
