Gastrointestinal Metastases from Breast Cancer, a Diagnostic Dilemma

Abstract: IntroductionEvery year, approximately 225,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer and another 40,000 die from the disease in the US. About 75% of all metastases will occur within the first 5 years after diagnosis of early-stage disease. This has been found to be especially true for hormone receptor-negative disease. Unfortunately, metastases can occur beyond that time, sometimes up to 30 years later, which is more common in hormone-positive disease [1,2]. Breast cancer will typically metastasize to lymph no… Show more

“…Gastrointestinal metastases of breast cancer are rather uncommon occurrences, although they are well described in the literature and exist mostly as case reports and small series. Mayo Clinic has previously reported a total of 32 cases out of 1,169 metastatic breast cancer incidences, metastasizing to the gastrointestinal tract and peritoneum [2] . Breast cancer histological features included 47% lobular, 31% ductal, 13% mixed, and 9% un-known.…”

“…14,15 Metastatic BC is usually positive for CK7, CEA, ER, and PR, but positivity for CK7 and CEA is nonspecific. 16,17 Because CK20 is almost always present in gastrointestinal tumors but not in BC, a CK7−/CK20 + expression pattern is consistent with primary colorectal tumors. 18 Some variations have been reported, such as villin-ER−/CEA-CK20 + tumors.…”
