Gastrointestinal Mucosa: The Target Site of Mucoadhesive Microspheres, A Review

Abstract: ABSTRACT:Mucoadhesive microspheres are one of the most promising novel techniques for drug delivery. Mucoadhesive systems offer a sustained drug release method, thus enhancing drug absorption in a site-specific manner. Microspheres have very small sizes and provide efficient carrier capacities. Mucoadhesive systems therefore play a vital role in drug delivery systems. Mucoadhesion is a two-step procedure, and its mechanism can be explained by combining theories of wetting, mechanical interlocking, electronic t… Show more

“…Gel microsphere and solid microsphere made of alginate can be obtained readily, serving as a delivery system for drugs, growth factors, cells, etc. [ 60 , 61 , 62 , 63 ]. Generally, alginate gel-microspheres are prepared by ionic crosslinking under aqueous conditions, which are suitable for the encapsulation of cells, growth factors and biologically active proteins [ 64 , 65 , 66 ].…”

“…First, the solution is atomized and mixed with a drying gas, the solvent is evaporated from the solution, and the powder obtained is separated from the drying gas [62,63]. One of the main reasons supporting the use of this method in structuring microspheres is because of its low cost, reproducibility, and simplicity [64]. In addition, the characteristics of the microspheres can be optimized, heat-sensitive materials can be encapsulated, and their microbiological quality is ensured [64,65].…”
