GC/MS Determination of Bioactive Constituents of Methanol Fraction of Spilanthes uliginosa (Sw) Leaves

Abstract: Plant as a source of herbal medicine is the oldest form of medicine known to mankind. It was the mainstay of many earlier civilization and still the most widely practiced form of medicine in the world currently. The GS-MS analysis of the leaf extract of Spilanthes uliginosa (Sw) was investigated. The analysis revealed the presence of six peaks from the chromatogram which showed six phytocompounds. The major phytocompounds identified in the leaf extract are hexadecanoic acid (8.68%), hepta-9, 10, 11-trienoic ac… Show more

“…Others include C=C (observed at stretching frequencies of 1649.19 and 1624.12 cm À 1 for sample A1 and 1604.83 cm À 1 for sample A2). The identified functional groups are in agreement with the phytochemicals reportedly present in methanolic extract of Spilanthes uliginosa leaf based on GCMS analyses [16].…”

“…Methanolic extract of Spilanthes uliginosa leaves has been reported to contain bioactive phytocompounds, the major ones being docosane aldehyde, hepta-9, 10, 11trienoic acid, heptadecane, hexadecanoic acid, octadecenoic acid, 5-hydroxylmethyl and 1-ethoxyoctadecane, listed in order of decreasing abundance [16]. Furthermore, Uraku and Ogbanhi reported that Spilanthes uliginosa leaves (mg/100 g) contained 2.15 0.50 alkaloids, 0.23 0.01 glycosides, 51.50 0.85 phenolics, 2.28 0.32 phytates, 4.31 0.01 saponins, 2.30 0.01 flavonoids and 2.61 0.29 tannins respectively [17].…”

“…Elaiyaraja and Chandramohan (2016) [2] reported that Indoneesiella echioides yielded 9 compounds in ethanol, 10 in butanol, 7 in methanol, 5 in acetone, 9 in chloroform and 13 compounds in n-hexane solvent. Uraku (2016) [16] extracted Spilanthes uliginosa and reported 6 compounds. Amudha and Rani (2014) recorded 20 compounds in ethanolic extract of Cadaba fructicosa.…”

“…Hexadecanoic acid, methyl ester belongs to the class of organic compounds known as fatty acid methyl esters, reported to have antibacterial and antifungal activities [38]. In another study, nematicidal and pesticidal activities of hexadecanoic acid, methyl ester have been reported [39]. Lupeol (phytosterol) has been reported to have antiinflammatory and anticancer activities [40,41].…”
