GdBaCo2O5+x layered perovskite as an intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cell cathode

Abstract: GdBaCo 2 O 5+x (GBCO) was evaluated as a cathode for intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel cells. A porous layer of GBCO was deposited on an anode-supported fuel cell consisting of a 15 m thick electrolyte of yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) prepared by dense screen-printing and a Ni-YSZ cermet as an anode (Ni-YSZ/YSZ/GBCO). Values of power density of 150 mW cm −2 at 700 • C and ca. 250 mW cm −2 at 800 • C are reported for this standard configuration using 5% of H 2 in nitrogen as fuel. An intermediate por… Show more

“…In the MIEC cathode, the cathode reaction takes in the entire surface of the MIEC cathode material, not just confined to the TPBs formed by LSM, electrolyte, and pores as in the LSM cathode [10]. These MIEC oxides, including (La,Sr)CoO 3 ·(LSC) [11][12][13], (La,Sr)(Co,Fe)O 3 ·(LSCF) [14,15], (Sm,Sr)Co 3 ·(SSC) [16][17][18][19], (Ba,Sr)(Co,Fe)O 3 ·(BSCF) [20], and GdBaCoO 5 + ␦ [21,22] have been demonstrated very high electrochemical performance. Besides Cocontaining MIECs which have received considerable attention, a few other new cathode materials have been developed, including pyrochlore oxides [23][24][25][26][27], Ruddlesden-Popper type oxides [28][29][30][31][32][33][34], LaNi 1 − x Fe x O 3 ·(LNF) based oxides [35,36].…”

“…Building on this there has also been growing interest in related layered structures such as the double perovskites [21][22][23]. Tarancon et al [22,23] O (99.99%, Aldrich) combined with citric acid and polyethylene glycol (PEG) was used. The mixed nitrates were heated with citric acid and PEG until gelation occurred and were then dehydrated and calcined to obtain the final products.…”
