“…Energetics and spatial characteristics of these generated holes show that carbon ion irradiation indeed generates the largest number of highly energetic holes on the sugar–phosphate side chains but not in a simple trend one might expect from the stopping power. Our first-principles theoretical work here has revealed key details of the DNA electronic excitation under α-particle and carbon ion irradiation in water, yielding atomistic insights into key characteristics associated with heavier ions, particularly carbon ions. ,, These key results contribute to building a comprehensive molecular-level understanding of DNA damage under ion irradiation.…”

“…This tool allowed us to simulate the irradiation of human fibroblast cells and the resulting damage to the three DNA conformations. [ 19 ] By calculating the yields of DSBs and single‐strand breaks, which represented both direct and indirect early DNA damage, we quantified and compared the differences in X‐ray‐induced damage for three DNA conformations. Notably, the highest DSB yields were obtained in the Z‐DNA conformation, with DSBs yielding 1.56‐fold higher than the other two DNA conformations ( Figure a; and Table S1, Supporting Information), implying the higher radiosensitivity in Z‐DNA conformation.…”

“…There is a lot of discussion regarding the implementation of physical phantoms to study cell survival in organs and tissues after an irradiation procedure [41,42]. Nevertheless, the cost for such applications needs a significant budget to be included in every laboratory, as well as a multidisciplinary approach combining many different types of expertise.…”
