Gelatin/Carrageenan-Based Functional Films with Carbon Dots from Enoki Mushroom for Active Food Packaging Applications

Abstract: Enoki mushroom-derived carbon dots (mCDs) were fabricated using a facile hydrothermal method to prepare gelatin/carrageenan-based active food packaging films. The mCDs were characterized by UV light spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, and transmission electron spectroscopy. They showed high antioxidant activity with negligible cytotoxicity toward mouse fibroblast L929 cells and were evenly dispersed in the gelatin/carrageenan polymer matrix to form a compatible composite film. The addition of mCDs pr… Show more

“…To characterize the surface topography of AFM images, the root-mean-square (RMS) parameter was analyzed. The RMS (Rq) roughness parameter is a measure of departures of profile from the mean level, which is equivalent to standard deviation of heights of peaks [56]. The addition of CNTs to κ-carrageenan-gelatin system results in the lowering of surface roughness to Rq = 4.13 nm compared with Rq = 6.98 nm in the CNT-free κ-carrageenan-gelatin xerogels, which is consistent with the known results [57].…”

“…The undissolved solids were removed by centrifugation at 5000 rpm for 15 min. The collected extract was stored at −20 • C until further use [36,37]. A total of 6.8 g of ZnCl 2 was added (0.1 M) to 500 mL of 10% ME, mixed well, and heated until the temperature reached 70 • C. Then, 500 mL of KOH solution (0.2 M) was slowly added to the mixture with vigorous agitation for one hour.…”

“…For a carrageenan/guar gum blend, Swain and Bal used AFM to measure the surface roughness depending on in-vitro degradation studies [ 139 ]. Roy et al added carbon dots to carrageenan/gelatin films for food packaging and found a reduced surface roughness for most combinations with carbon dots as compared to the pure carrageenan/gelatin films [ 140 ]. Muthulakshmi et al used AFM topography images to show the improved corrosion resistance of a medical-grade stainless steel in mild acidic conditions due to a carrageenan/gelatin coating [ 141 ].…”
