Gemini Near-Infrared Spectrograph Observations of a Red Star-forming Galaxy at z  = 2.225: Evidence of Shock Ionization Due to a Galactic Wind

Abstract: Recent studies have shown that K-luminous galaxies at have high Ha line widths and high 2 ! z ! 2.5 [N ii] l6583/Ha ratios. If these lines arise from photoionization by massive stars in H ii regions, these results imply that massive, metal-rich galaxies exist at high redshift. Here we investigate the ionization mechanism in a galaxy with and in the Chandra Deep Field-South, using the new Gemini Near-Infrared Spectrograph K p 19.1 z p 2.225 s (GNIRS). GNIRS's cross-dispersed mode gives simultaneous access to th… Show more

“…We observed 26 The spectra of two of these galaxies have already been presented by van Dokkum et al (2005) and Kriek et al (2006). All galaxies were observed in the cross-dispersed mode, in combination with the short-wavelength camera, the 32 line mm Ϫ1 grating ( ), and the 0Љ .675 # 6Љ .2 slit.…”

“…Third, incompleteness may play a role, as we observed only ∼20% of the galaxies that meet the selection criteria. We note, however, that according to R-S and K-S tests, our Kselected sample has a similar distribution of rest-frame U Ϫ colors as the large mass-limited sample (110 11 M , ) by van V Dokkum et al (2006) when applying the same K-magnitude cut. Furthermore, the assumption that Ha emission is only due to star formation may lead us to underestimate the fraction.…”
