Gender and International Marriage Migration

Abstract: In the last two decades, the growth of intra‐regional marriage migration in Asia has stimulated scholarly interest in destination countries. Marriage migration led to social, demographic, and cultural transformations of current and future generations in these countries, and raised new issues in relation to race, ethnicity, gender, class, and nationality. “…We also examine the success of existing studies in uncovering the complexity of migrant women's lives beyond categories that constrain them as simply “wife or worker” (Piper and Roces ). Our review of the literature suggests that even as studies of domestic labor migration have moved substantively beyond treating these women only as “workers” by illuminating their everyday lives as mothers, lovers, and political actors, studies of marriage migration still need to pay more attention to migrant women's diverse lived experiences as “workers.” For example, while the literature on marriage migration has been incorporated into the concept of “global care chains” (Kim ; Lan ; Lu ), it is often assumed – rather than examined and interrogated – that migrant wives fulfill unpaid reproductive and domestic labor at home. In other words, while most studies acknowledge the unpaid reproductive labor carried out by marriage migrants, few studies (Yeoh et al ) have placed the day‐to‐day unpaid laboring process at the center of their analyses.…”
