Abstract-Contribution: This paper provides evidence of the lack of gender diversity at audio engineering conferences, using a novel and inclusive gender determination method to produce a new dataset of author gender.Background: Audio engineering has historically been maledominated; while the number of non-male audio engineers has increased recently, the industry mindset has changed very little. Studies into the gender diversity of this field are required, to force a shift in mindset and create a more inclusive environment.Research Questions: To what extent is there an imbalance in the representation of different genders at audio engineering conferences? Do conference topic, presentation type, or author position have an impact on the gender balance?Methodology: A novel method was designed to obtain pronouns of authors where possible, avoiding removal of data or potential false positives. The main limitation of this methodology is the time required for gender determination. Gender composition was analyzed across 20 conferences, with gender balance further analyzed within four key categories: conference topic, presentation type, position in the author byline, and the number of authors.Findings: This study demonstrates a clear lack of gender diversity in conference authorship in audio engineering. The results show low overall representation of non-male authors at audio engineering conferences, with significant differences across conference topics, and a notable lack of gender diversity within invited presentations.

Este artigo expõe os resultados de uma pesquisa que foi norteada pela seguinte questão: qual a representação das mulheres na autoria e corpo editorial de periódicos científicos brasileiros da área cirúrgica nos últimos cinco anos? Os objetivos da pesquisa foram os de identificar e analisar a produção científica brasileira em cirurgia através de artigos científicos publicados no período de 2010 a 2014 em quatro periódicos: Acta Cirúrgica Brasileira (ACB), Arquivos Brasileiros de Cirurgia Digestiva (ABCD), Revista Brasileira de Cirurgia Cardiovascular (RBCCV) e Revista do Colégio Brasileiro de Cirurgiões (RCBC). A análise bibliométrica foi a abordagem metodológica adotada e os resultados obtidos apontaram que 920 artigos foram escritos por 5.649 autores. Os homens aparecem como autores em 63,5% (n= 585) dos artigos, enquanto que as mulheres comparecem como autoras em 23,8% (n=219) do total de artigos. Ao investigar o gênero da autoria nos artigos originais e de revisão, os resultados mostraram que a participação feminina é inferior à masculina em ambos os tipos, e em todos os quatro periódicos. Em relação à participação das mulheres nos corpos editoriais dos periódicos, os resultados revelaram que apenas no periódico ABCD a presença feminina é única e exclusiva, enquanto que no periódico RCBC essa situação se inverte; isto é, não há mulheres no corpo editorial. O estudo realizado demonstrou que persistem as assimetrias de gênero em termos das autorias, coautorias, tipos de artigos (originais e de revisão), e também no corpo editorial, comitê científico e corpo de revisores.

Women's representation in science is increasing steadily, with some elds closing gender parity in terms of participation and scienti c output. Animal Cognition appears to fall into that category. However, a careful analysis of gender author balance in 600 animal cognition papers revealed some remaining disparities. Despite that female animal cognition scientists dominate rst authorship positions, receive equal citations, and publish in equally high quality journals, they are still severely under-represented in positions of seniority. In addition, disparities remain at the group level, where all-female author teams are not only the minority in our dataset, but also seem to receive disproportionally less citations than all-male author teams, regardless the quality of the publications. We also found that female animal cognition scientists focus on different taxa, and tend to include study animals of both sexes more often than male scientists. Our study suggests that despite the meaningful contribution of female scientists to the eld, Animal Cognition continues to be marred by gender biases.
