“…In this subsection, we have used SocioFillmore to perform a preliminary statistical analysis of agentivity backgrounding in media reports of femicides and imbalanced crashes. A natural question is what we can conclude from this analysis: do the data match the expectations that we had based on Pinelli and Zanchi (2021) and Te Brömmelstroet (2020)? At first glance, it seems that they largely do: while, for both femicides and imbalanced crashes, the overall most frequent frame type is agent-focused, agent-backgrounding constructions and role configurations are the majority within each frame.…”

“…In this chapter, we introduced responsibility framing as the phenomenon of foregrounding and backgrounding the presence and agentivity of certain participants in morally loaded events, carrying the suggestion of increased or decreased responsibility of these participants. We argued that femicides 2020) and Pinelli and Zanchi (2021), in that we found a high prevalence of agent backgrounding in both of our datasets. Drawing strong conclusions is still difficult: agent backgrounding is inevitable to some degree (e.g., the use of nominalizations to refer to an already introduced event, the use of passives to make a text more stylistically pleasing, and the use of ambiguous language as a reflection of ambiguous facts), and our method currently does not take this into account.…”

“…On the other hand, cognitive linguists have carried out cognitive linguistic analyses on the discourse regarding social issues and events (e.g. Pinelli and Zanchi (2021)), but these analyses usually imply manual scrutiny of data and, accordingly, deal with small datasets.…”

“…The easiest way in which this pervasiveness of subjectivity can be observed is at the lexical level: the choice of words definitely reflects social and personal perspectives, opinions, and stances (Lin et al, 2006 ). Other work has shown that more subtle ways of expressing perspectives in discourse can be found at the syntax-semantic interface (Horst, 2020 ; Te Brömmelstroet, 2020 ; Pinelli and Zanchi, 2021 ; Minnema et al, 2022 ). While most work in Computational Linguistics and Natural Language Processing still focuses on language phenomena on which humans agree to a large extent, there is a growing interest in modeling people's perspectivization of a shared event or language phenomenon by taking into account their own interests, agenda, and how that influences the way in which communication is perceived.…”
