Gene biomarkers in peripheral white blood cells of horses with experimentally induced osteoarthritis

Abstract: Expression of ADAMDEC1, GRP94, HCST, hUNC-93A, and RRM2 was differentially regulated in peripheral WBCs obtained from horses with experimentally induced osteoarthritis. Gene expression of ADAMDEC1, hUNC-93A, and RRM2 in peripheral WBCs has the potential for use as a diagnostic aid for osteoarthritis in horses.

“…Subsequently, upregulation of collagen genes, including COL1A, COL1A2, COL2 and COL3A1, is observed [3,41]. In horses, the effect of corticosteroid administration on the expression of collagen coding genes has been mixed.…”

“…In addition, several compounds can diffuse through the cartilage from the fluid or from the subchondral bone (Schultz et al 2011). Early identification of OA is critical for the prevention of disease progression (Kamm et al 2013). The stages include clinically silent disease, active (similar to a noninfectious inflammatory process) disease, and physical manifestation or decompensation.…”

“…Moreover, the changes in blood gene expression may also indicate physiological processes associated with OA progression. The role of several factors in OA pathogenesis have been suggested based on the increased levels in peripheral blood samples [17, 18]. The molecules considered as promising biomarkers include hyaluronan, collagen epitopes, aggrecan, and matrix metalloproteinase-3 [19].…”
