General prefault transient stability estimation index using wide area phasor measurements

Abstract: Summary In this paper, a general Transient Stability Estimation Index (TSEI) is introduced, which can be used in different network without any data training step. The TSEI determines the stability status based on quantifying the impact of parameters, which affect transient stability problem. To quantify the parameters, some networks are simulated off‐line, and these parameters are randomly changed in their typical range. Then, the impact of these parameters is analyzed using critical clearing time of simulated… Show more

“…The wide‐area algorithms based on synchrophasor data provided by phasor measurement units (PMUs) or digital relays equipped with global positioning system (GPS) can help to protect and control the power system more effectively. Also, the back‐up protection of lines could be improved by implementing data from strategic locations equipped with the mentioned devices . However, there are some difficulties using those algorithms such as communication link availability, delay time, and limitation in number of installed devices throughout the nowadays networks.…”

“…By observing the geometric characteristic of the post‐fault trajectory of the generalized one‐machine equivalent system, the loss of synchronism is determined at each time step. In , a transient stability estimation index is proposed for estimating the stability state using wide‐area measurements. The index can be used in different networks without any previous training.…”
