General principles and overview of vascular contrast-enhanced ultrasonography

Abstract: Ultrasonography (US) is the first-line modality for the evaluation of vascular pathology. Although well-established for many diseases, US has inherent limitations that can occasionally hinder an accurate diagnosis. The value of US was improved by the introduction of microbubbles as ultrasonographic contrast agents (UCAs) and the emergence of contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS), following the introduction of second-generation UCAs and the emergence of modern contrast-specific techniques. CEUS offers valuab… Show more

“…Anechoic analysis is performed by scanning the phantom and freezing (choosing) the image, making measurement, and recording anechoic visualization composed by measuring diameter of each anechoic circle vertically and horizontally of the phantom. In order to find out the percentage of axial and lateral accuracy of measurement results, comparisons can be made between distance from those results and actual distances as stated in the phantom CIRS 054GS book manual [11].…”

“…Additionally, contrast-enhanced US (CEUS) refers to the application of US contrast agents in medical US. CEUS can provide anatomic information with gray-scale US and physiologic information through the SDUS, CDUS, and PDUS techniques, making it indispensable in the assessment of vascular pathology [15][16][17][18][19][20][21]. The presence of a microbubble US contrast agent in the vasculature enhances the backscattering of US waves, resulting in a marked amplification of flow signals and providing information on the microvasculature [12,21,22].…”

“…A higher mechanical index (MI) applied also results in earlier disruption of microbubbles. A higher dose of 4.8 ml of the UCA should be used for achieving optimal enhancement of testicular parenchyma [9,22].…”

“…A rare consequence of penetrating testicular trauma is a pseudoaneurysm which appears as an anechoic region on B-mode imaging. On CDUS and spectral Doppler US interrogation, oscillating spectral Doppler ("ying yang" appearance on CDUS) is typical of a pseudoaneurysm [23] and can also be seen on CEUS [22].…”
