Generalized allergic reaction in response to exercise due to strawberry gibberellin-regulated protein: a case report

Abstract: Background The Rosaceae family includes fruits, such as peach, apple, Japanese apricot, cherry (Prunoideae subfamily), and strawberry (Rosoideae subfamily). The allergens responsible for Rosaceae fruit allergies have been reported to include Bet v 1 and profilin, which mainly cause oral symptoms, and lipid transfer protein (LTP). Recently, gibberellin-regulated protein (GRP) has been identified as an allergen that induces generalized symptoms in peach-, orange-, and plum-related allergies. Most… Show more

“…Unfortunately, we were not able to achieve functional reductions of CD38 in the cell lines used in the present study (C4-2B and PC3); therefore, it is possible that other players participate in the signaling. Furthermore, there are known ABA inhibitors in plants, including gibberellins, which can in some cases serve as allergens and of which derivatives may have anti-neoplastic activities (71)(72)(73)(74)(75)(76)(77). Whether equivalent proteins function in human systems remains unclear.…”

“…Recently, a GRP allergen in strawberry was considered responsible for an exercise-induced systemic allergic reaction in a patient also allergic to Japanese cedar pollen, and a similar case caused by grape GRP has also been reported [12,13]. Sensitization to fruit GRP is often observed alongside sensitization to Cupressaceae pollen in both Europe and Japanese cedar pollen in Japan, however, it is unclear whether the primary sensitizer is the pollen or fruit [14].…”

“…Several workers in strawberry greenhouse have workrelated symptoms and sensitize strawberry pollen, but not all workers are necessarily sensitized to Fra a 1. Recently, another new allergen, gibberellin-regulated protein from strawberries was case reported [27]. We should be careful not to misinterpret these symptoms as OAS by Fra a 1.…”
