Generalized allometric volume and biomass equations for some tree species in Europe

Abstract: Since biomass is one of the key variables in ecosystem studies, widespread effort has aimed to facilitating its estimation. Numerous stand-specific volume and biomass equations are available, but these cannot be used for scaling up biomass to the regional level where several age-classes and structural types of stands coexist. Therefore simplified generalized volume and biomass equations are needed. In the present study, generalized biomass and volume regression equations were developed for the main tree specie… Show more

“…In this study, the general biomass model, Equation (2), the dummy variable model, Equation (3), linear mixed effects model, Equation (4), and the Bayesian hierarchical model, Equation (5), were used to fit the biomass data on 360 sample larch trees from six regions (S1, S2, S3, S4, S5, S6) in China, developing the model of total tree, root, stem wood, stem bark, branch, and needle biomass respectively. Parameter estimates of the models, Equations (2)-(5) are presented in Tables 3-6.…”

“…The biomass data of each component in different regions was summarized in Table 2. Allometric equations were widely used for estimating biomass [1,2,5,7]. The form of the equation provides a good balance between accurate predictions and low data requirements by using the most commonly and easily measured variable, which is DBH.…”

“…We supplemented these previously reported data (Hobbie et al 2006;2007) with new data on nutrient concentrations in stemwood. Stemwood was collected from six trees per plot in March 2009 by coring with 40 cm Pressler borers (5 mm diameter).…”
