Generating the Baseline in the Early Detection of Bud Rot and Red Ring Disease in Oil Palms by Geospatial Technologies

Abstract: Oil palm cultivation in Ecuador is important for the agricultural sector. As a result of it, the country generates sources of employment in some of the most vulnerable zones; it contributes 0.89% of the gross domestic product and 4.35% of the agricultural gross domestic product. In 2017, a value of USD $252 million was generated by exports, and palm contributed 4.53% of the agricultural gross domestic product (GDP). It is estimated that 125,000 hectares of palm were lost in the Republic of Ecuador due to Red R… Show more

“…The minimum and maximum wavelengths are those that were used for the calculation of the VIs based on [68]. Once the values to be used had been determined, the VIs, such as the NDVI, GNDVI, NGRDI, RVI, GVI, CCI, RARSa, generated the corresponding reflectance values [69][70][71][72][73][74].…”

“…In addition, UAV-based remote sensing has a great advantage over satellite remote sensing in relatively high cloud cover areas, such as Southeast Asia, particularly during monsoon seasons. It has already been used for studies on individual tree detection, growth monitoring, and disease monitoring in oil palm plantations [20][21][22][23][24]. However, few studies addressed UAV-based hyperspectral imaging for the detection of BSR disease in oil palm trees.…”

“…To the best of the authors' knowledge, the only multirotor UAS capable of flying for more than 60 min, thanks to an exquisite aerodynamic design, a light carbon-fibre cell and the use of Lithium-Ion cells, is CONDOR™, manufactured by the Spanish company Dronetools™ (Gelves-Seville) [7] Although a maximum flight time on the verge of an hour for a multirotor UAS is an exceptional achievement, it is clearly not sufficient when reasonably large payloads, such as Light Detection and Ranging Systems (LiDAR), must be used [8], or when lower weight payloads are installed but the operation involves the inspection of large expanses of terrain [9][10][11]. The market for H-UAS and hybrid generators is very limited.…”
