Generation of powerful subnanosecond microwave pulses in the range of 38-150 GHz

Abstract: Experimental measurements of coherent stimulated radiation from intense, subnanosecond electron bunches moving through a periodic waveguide and interacting with a backward propagating TM01 male are presented. The ultra-short microwave pulses in Ka, W, and G band were generated with repetition frequencies of up to 25 Hz, Observation of RF breakdown of ambient air, as well as direct measurements by hot-carrier germanium detectors, gives an estimate of the peak power up to 140 MW for the 300-400 ps pulses at 38 G… Show more

“…Frequency measurements using a set of cut-off waveguide filters show that the pulse spectrum has a central frequency in the interval 0.13-0.15 THz. The peak power of generated SR pulses was estimated by integrating the detector signal over the directional pattern and achieved of 50-70 MW, that strongly exceeds the value obtained in the previous sub-terahertz experiments [5] with singlemode waveguides.…”

“…Alongside the investigation of the generation of subnanosecond SR pulses at Ka-band, similar experiments are performed at W-band (75 GHz) and G-band (150 GHz) [19]. The Wband SR pulses possessed a sharp leading edge < 120 ps and peak power ∼10-15 MW.…”

“…Farokhi et al [83] have presented a linear theory for a free electron laser with a three-dimensional helical wiggler and axial magnetic field in the collective regime in a configuration consisting of an annular electron beam propagating inside a cylindrical waveguide. For the generation of high power (140 MW) subnanosecond (75 ps) microwave pulses in the range of 38 -150 GHz, Yalandin et al [84] have done experiments on coherent stimulated radiation from intense, subnanosecond electron bunches moving through a periodic waveguide and interacting with a backward propagating TM01 wave. Hayashi et al [85] have also designed a two-stage ferroelectric electron gun and a peak power of 5.9 MW microwave radiation was observed when a 100A 450 kV electron beam was used.…”
