Generation Y, Baby Boomers, and Gaze Interaction Experience in Gaming

Abstract: With the advances of technology, gaze is becoming increasingly an attractive and viable interaction method in games. In particular, gaze is likely to provide a natural way of interaction in some games. However, little work has been done to design games that use gaze as an interaction method and test users' reactions to it. Additionally, despite the fact that Generation Y and Baby Boomers form a sizable population of gamers, little work has been done to see if users' generation can influence the experience of g… Show more

“…The fundamental principle of gaze interaction is to leverage gaze as a natural pointer and selection mechanism for objects the users align with their eyes. Therefore, an object is selected when it is looked at [15], triggering the object choice and modulating a future event. Once the selection is made, gaze can move away leaving the object selected.…”

“…Others used where the eyes point to directly move the characters to that position [23], on a horizontal axis [24] or aim their direction [25]. Players can trigger actions by aligning where the eyes point with objects in the game, to select them [26], activate different game defence modes [27] or shoot [28]. Generally, gaze is used with other inputs because we use the eyes not only for interaction but also as a sensor to perceive the scene.…”

“…The main thrust of interaction mechanics in gaze-enabled games range from the use of gaze to control the camera viewpoint [24,19]; graphics rendering [7]; to adapt the difficulty of the game based on the player's gaze behavior [17,1]; avatar movement control [10,23]; to aim at targets [9,4]; among others. Overall, the main concept is to use gaze pointing as the mechanism for the selection of objects of interest.…”
