Generic and species concepts inMicroglena(previously theChlamydomonas monadinagroup) revised using an integrative approach

Abstract: Traditionally the genus Microglena Ehrenberg has been used to contain species that belong to the Chrysophyceae; however, the type species of Microglena, M. monadina, represents a green alga, which was later transferred to the genus Chlamydomonas. The taxonomic status of the genus has therefore remained unclear. We investigated 15 strains previously assigned to C. monadina and two marine species (C. reginae and C. uva-maris) using an integrative approach. Phylogenetic analyses of SSU and ITS rDNA sequences reve… Show more

“…Studies of molecular data have corroborated a close alliance between some Haematococcus taxa and Stephanosphaera (Buchheim & Chapman, 1991;Pröschold et al, 2001;Buchheim et al, 2002;Nakada & Nozaki, 2007Nakada et al, 2008aNakada et al, , 2008bDemchenko et al, 2012). However, some of these studies have suggested that Haematococcus is not strictly monophyletic, as H. droebakensis, H. zimbabwiensis ( Fig.…”

“…A modern approach to algal taxonomy is a tremendous undertaking that requires training in molecular phylogenetic methods, experience with light and electron microscopy, and knowledge of a large body of taxonomic and systematic data. Nonetheless, the recent examples of generic revisions of Chloromonas (Nozaki et al, 2002), Chlorogonium (Nakada et al, 2008a and Chlamydomonas (Pröschold et al, 2001;Demchenko et al, 2012) highlight how absolutely critical these combined approaches are to advancing our understanding of the chlamydomonad flagellates.…”

“…The chlorophyte Chlamydomonas monoica (59), one of an interfertile group that includes Chlamydomonas noctigama and Chlamydomonas geitleri, is a member of the Moewusii clade that also includes Chlamydomonas eugametos; this lineage is only distantly related to the Reinhardtinia clade that includes the wellstudied species Chlamydomonas reinhardtii (60)(61)(62). The eisosomes of C. eugametos have been imaged previously (37,38).…”

In contrast, the eisosomes of two members of the branching Chloromonas clade (61,88), Chlamydomonas nivalis/augusta and Chlamydomonas yellowstoniensis, display a standard, nonreversed orientation (3).
