Generic recircumscriptions of Oncidiinae (Orchidaceae: Cymbidieae) based on maximum likelihood analysis of combined DNA datasets

Abstract: Phylogenetic relationships within the orchid subtribe Oncidiinae sensu Chase were inferred using maximum likelihood analyses of single and multilocus DNA sequence data sets. Analyses included both nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer DNA and plastid regions (matK exon, trnH-psbA intergenic spacer and two portions of ycf1 exon) for 736 individuals representing approximately 590 species plus seven outgroup taxa. Based on the well resolved and highly supported results, we recognize 61 genera in Oncidiina… Show more

“…The latter is sister to the pair Fernandezia-Pachyphyllum, which are sisters to each other. On the other hand, the tree provided by Neubig et al (2012;Fig. 2) contains 17 taxa of Pachyphyllineae (sensu Chase and Whitten 2011), seven of which remains unidentified on the species level. Also here, Raycadenco is sister to all other Pachyphyllineae taxa.…”

“…This heterogeneous group has a broad morphological diversity of floral and vegetative structures (Chase et al, 2003;Neubig et al, 2012) and the widest range of chromosomes numbers known for Orchidaceae, with a noticeable variation in genome size (Chase et al, 2005;Neubig et al, 2012). The species inhabit different environments and, hence, have a great diversification of pollination systems (Dressler, 1993;Papadopulos et al, 2013).…”
