Genes, Environments, Personality, and Successful Aging: Toward a Comprehensive Developmental Model in Later Life

Abstract: Co-twin control designs can be employed to help determine causality via a closer approximation of the idealized counterfactual design. Gene-by-environment interaction (G × E) designs can be employed to understand how individual difference characteristics, such as personality, might moderate genetic and environmental influences on successful aging outcomes. Application of such methods can clarify the interplay of genes, environments, personality, and successful aging.

“…Longevity is a complex phenotype arising from multiple variables, and genetic background plays a pivotal role not only for a deterministic control on hereditary disorders, but also in modulating the individual response to environmental hits and drug therapies (Eaton et al 2012;Murabito et al 2012;Chung et al 2010;Seripa et al 2010). Genes with involvement in basic physiologic Fig.…”

“…This might be due to non-specific disease susceptibility presumably acting through insufficient immune response [12]. It is also possible, that some genes exert their influence on longevity through personality traits, such as conscientiousness and some of its facets (responsibility, self-control and traditionalism) which have been shown to be significant predictors of extended life-span [13]. …”

“…2 Individual factors such as genes, gender and age have an effect on weight, obesity and health behaviors in general. 3,4 However, the ecological framework of health promotion states that social and physical environmental factors also influence health behaviors. 5 Part of the physical environment influencing health behaviors, such as food choices, is the food environment, which has been conceptualized to include any opportunity to obtain food.…”
