An investigation was done to characterize and classify paddy and associated nonpaddy soils of the Upper Brahmaputra Valley of Assam. In this study,three districts viz., Sivasagar, Jorhat, and Golaghat in the Brahmaputra valley of Assam were selected. These districts are located in the Upper Brahmaputra Valley Zone (UBV) of Assam. Combined, they cover an approximate area of 9021 sq. Km or about 55.7 per cent of UBV. Six soil profiles, three each from mono-cropped paddy and, associated nonpaddy areas were collected from the districts mentioned. These samples were collected Horizon wise from each soil profile. Each soil sample was dried and passed through a 2 mm sieve. The samples from each pedon were evaluated for morphological and Physicochemical characteristics,based on morphological and physicochemical properties. Thesoils were classified as Aquic Dystric Eutrudepts (P1), Dystric Eutrudepts (NP1, NP2, P3, NP3) and Dystric Fluventic Eutrudepts (P2).

The distribution of pedogenic oxides of Fe, Mn, lind Al was de~cribed for rice soils of Saga polder lands and its relationship to soil development with time was investigated. The distribution ofMn largely paraJlelled that of Fe and in response to the soil devf'lopment t1lf'ir al.'Cumulation occurred in the D horizons of the profiles. Manganese was the element most susceptible to downward movrment, which led to a pronounced lowering of extractable Mn Contf'nt in the surface horizonl in well-developed soil morphology. Dy contrast, this is not the case for AI which, in general, had little change in extractable Al and II $light increase in tOtal AI with depth as the time increased. Apparently the distribution of Mn was Inrgely govt'rned by the f'xtf'nt ofteduction processes, whereas in the AI distribution clay migration may be a principal controlling factor. The distribution of Fe may be due chiefly to the reduction prOCf'sses. with some contribution from the clay migration.
