Genetic analysis of haematological and plasma biochemical parameters in the Spanish purebred horse exercised on a treadmill

Abstract: The novel aim of this study was to describe the reference values of different haematological and biochemical parameters in the Spanish purebred horse (Andalusian, SPB) in each of the stages of a programmed exercise on a treadmill system, and to establish heritability and genetic correlations for these haematological and biochemical parameters. For this, 94 young SPB male horses (4.22 6 2.27 years old) were used. An increasing intensity exercise test at 4, 5, 6 and 7 m/s was carried out on a treadmill (6% incli… Show more

“…The Friesian breed trended toward higher LDH activities. This trend was also reported in the Spanish Andalusian breed, a potentially interesting finding considering the history of the Friesian breed. However, a higher RI for CK and AST activities in Andalusians were speculated to be related to the handling of the horses prior to sampling.…”

“…This can be true for many RI used by veterinarians. Few published studies report breed or type‐specific RI in horses, and older studies use obsolete analyzers so that comparisons to current studies cannot be made. Without further studies, differences in breed‐specific RI and the applicability of general RI to specific horse breeds are unknown.…”

“…The least intensive exercise was applied during the dressage training (group D). The relative intensity of exercise in horses can also be estimated on the basis of changes in some biochemical parameters, for example, LA and UA levels (Desmecht et al, 1996;Escribano et al, 2013). Generally, the post-exercise values of LA and UA correlate positively with the intensity of exercise (Desmecht et al, 1996;Castejón et al, 2006).…”

“…This improved cytoskeleton purification method will aid our understanding of how the cytoskeleton controls normal and diseased cell functions. Escribano and co-workers studied the reference values of different haematological and biochemical parameters in the Spanish Purebred horse (SPB, Andalusian) in each of the stages of a programmed exercise on a treadmill system [19]. Ninety four young SPB male horses (4.2 ± 2.3 years old) were used.…”
