Genetic Analysis of Invasive Aedes albopictus Populations in Los Angeles County, California and Its Potential Public Health Impact

Abstract: The Asian tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus, is an anthropophilic aggressive daytime-biting nuisance and an efficient vector of certain arboviruses and filarial nematodes. Over the last 30 years, this species has spread rapidly through human travel and commerce from its native tropical forests of Asia to every continent except Antarctica. In 2011, a population of Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) was discovered in Los Angeles (LA) County, California. To determine the probable origin of this invasive speci… Show more

“…Although incomplete input data may account for some model failures, anthropogenic factors could also impact model results locally: for example, Ae. albopictus populations introduced into and established in Los Angeles, in southern California [44] may be able to survive there thanks to urban subsidy of moisture, but the details are not clear. In addition to omissions, model predictions appeared to extrapolate into several high-latitude regions (e.g.…”

“…Additionally, a recent study analyzing COI mtDNA variation strongly supports an Asian origin of Ae. albopictus populations established sometime after 2001 in Los Angeles county (Zhong et al 2013). A common theme from all of these analyses is that Ae.…”

“…It could be argued that the SIG overestimates risk by not accounting for absolute limits on population establishment associated with very cold temperatures in winter and very dry conditions. However, perhaps SIG provide a better indication of the climatic suitability in some urban and sub-urban areas where refugia from extremes of climate, including very low mid-winter temperatures, may exist [51,55].…”
