Genetic analysis of prophage effects on heteroimmune superin fection in Serratia marcescens

Abstract: Plaque formation of phage x on Serratia marcescens strain H Y normally depends on the presence of either a y or y prophage in the indicator bacteria. Bacterial ink mutants allowing x growth in the absence of either prophage were isolated from the doubly cured strain H Y (y, y)-. By means of a x mutant, named qdy, a n active participation of x in antagonizing inhibition of its own growth on HY (y, y)was demonstrated. The qdy mutation is closely linked to gene CIII coding for the x repressor. The prophages y and… Show more

“…As many of the latter now behaved like int-lysogens, they may descend from tandem-dilysogenic recipient cells. (STEIGER et al 1972, STEIGER 1981 and both cII and cIII lie in the 9 RU long T-U section; cII and cIII are represented by the mutants c l and c2 on WINKLER'S map. With susU188 as an outside marker to the right and, as a Fig.…”

“…A gene with apparent activity in the prophage state besides the repressor and I, genes is iny: related to the age of the culture it causes an interference with growth of infecting y phage (STEIGER 1981). 1, and iny are neighbouring and lie left of cII, on the vegetative map.…”
