Genetic and antigenic characterization of measles viruses that circulated in Korea during the 2000–2001 epidemic

Abstract: Despite the marked reduction in the incidence of measles in Korea by the introduction of measles vaccine, a large measles epidemic occurred during 2000-2001. During the epidemic, more than 55,000 measles cases were reported and at least 7 children were dead. In this study, we analyzed the genetic and antigenic properties of 15 measles viruses that isolated during the epidemic. Sequence analyses of entire hemagglutinin (H) and nucleoprotein (N) genes of the viruses indicated that all Korean isolates had a high … Show more

“…The H1 genotype was also detected in large outbreaks in both Japan, and Korea in 2000–2001 [22,23]. Genotypes D3, D5, and D9 were the most frequently detected genotypes in Japan before the outbreaks associated with genotype H1 suggesting that the recent H1 viruses in Japan originated in China.…”

“…More than 109 000 cases were reported from China in 2007, representing 39 % of the global measles cases (Bian et al, 2006;Liffick et al, 2001;Xu et al, 1998;Yu et al, 2007;Zhang et al, 2008). H1 has also been observed in Korea and Japan (Na et al, 2003;Nakayama et al, 2003;Tomita, 2006;Zhou et al, 2003). In China, both H variants, P397 and L397, have been found since 1993 whereas in Korea and Japan, only the L397 variant has been detected in samples collected since 2000.…”
