Genetic and Environmental Variation in Continuous Phenotypes in the ABCD Study®

Abstract: Twin studies yield valuable insights into the sources of variation, covariation and causation in human traits. The ABCD Study® (abcdstudy.org) was designed to take advantage of four universities known for their twin research, neuroimaging, population-based sampling, and expertise in genetic epidemiology so that representative twin studies could be performed. In this paper we use the twin data to: (i) provide initial estimates of heritability for the wide range of phenotypes assessed in the ABCD Study using a c… Show more

“…Interestingly, the RAVLT had near-zero estimates for all random effects variances in all models, indicating that this task may be exceptionally unreliable in this sample, or perhaps particularly prone to variance in measurement. For further information regarding the heritability of 14,500 phenotypes in the ABCD Study ® baseline sample, see recent work by Maes and colleagues (2023).…”

“…(2) the common environment component is free to estimate negative variance, which could indicate substantial dominant genetic effects that outweigh any common environmental effects that are present (for a thorough explanation of this approach see Maes et al, 2023).…”
