The high prevalence of anthelmintic-resistant gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) throughout the world has led to the need for alternative worm control strategies. One of the possible substitutes to reduce the problems of drug resistance and residue is the evaluation/breeding of small ruminants for greater resistance to the GINs (organically produced), which in turn would be a helpful tool to predict the performance of an animal. At present, the existing diversity in the genetic potential to resist/tolerate GINs infection both within and between breeds has been validated. Successful selection of animals to define the genotype and identified resistance is related to the employed markers. A number of phenotypic traits such as faecal egg count (FEC), worm burden, serum antibodies, peripheral eosinophilia, packed cell volume, live weight, serum protein and albumin concentrations have been used for this purpose both in natural and artificial infections. Relatively resistant/tolerant animals have also been found to have mastocytosis, globule leucocytes, high levels of histamine and immunoglobulin (Ig) A and IgE concentrations. Of these traits, the principal and most practical measurement used to assess resistance status in animals undergoing similar parasite challenges is FEC. FEC has a positive/negative correlation with other biochemical, cellular and immunological parameters; however, the reliability of individual trial is often questioned and valuable information regarding the genetic makeup can be obtained from pooled data of a large number of trials and parameters. This paper covers all the aspects reported in the literature on various parameters considered to evaluate the resistance status of a range of small ruminant breeds.

A study was carried out on New Zealand dairy cows at pasture, to test for evidence of genetic differences in immunological response to nematode parasites. Nine widely used HolsteinFriesian artificial insemination bulls, with daughters in many herds, were evaluated for nematode antibodies by sampling milk of their daughters in mid lactation in each of 20 North Island herds. One milk sample was taken from each cow (ranging from 4 to 11 years of age), during a routine herd test in the period from mid November 2000 to early February 2001. Assays were undertaken subsequently on pooled samples of skim milk (0.2 ml per cow; up to 20 cows per sire x herd) to assess antibodies to both the infective third larval (L3) and adult parasitic stages of Cooperia oncophora and Ostertagia ostertagi. Sire effects were significant for all four antibody types (P < 0.001). anti-parasite antibody levels were present in mature lactating dairy cows at pasture in New Zealand, with repeatabilities of sire means across herds of 0.29-0.39, and that sire effects on antibody levels to two different nematode parasite species were highly correlated (for antibodies to either the L3 or the adult stages).

RESUMO:Este trabalho foi realizado com objetivo de avaliar a possibilidade de identificar ovelhas resistentes e susceptíveis às parasitoses por meio de um marcador parasitológico (direto), de marcadores imunológicos (indiretos) ou pela associação entre ambos. Vinte ovelhas foram acompanhadas por coletas mensais de sangue e fezes no período de novembro de 1998 a maio de 1999. O marcador parasitológico utilizado foi o número de ovos de helmintos por grama de fezes (OPG); os marcadores imunológicos foram o número de eosinófilos sanguíneos, imunoglobulinas G (IgG) e E (IgE) anti-Haemonchus contortus. As ovelhas puderam ser classificadas como resistentes ou susceptíveis pelo OPG. Pelo o número de eosinófilos ou pela IgE específica utilizados concomitantemente com o OPG foi possível identificar ovelhas resistentes e susceptíveis ao parasitismo gastrintestinal. O número de eosinófilos sanguíneos foi o único marcador imunológico que permite de classificar as ovelhas indiretamente nos mesmos grupos obtidos pelo o OPG. Twenty ewes were sampled monthly for blood and faeces, from July of 1998 to June of 1999. Faecal egg counts (FEC) was chosen as parasitological marker. The number of peripheral eosinophils, IgE and IgG anti-Haemonchus contortus were used as immunological markers. Sheep could be classified as resistant or susceptible by FEC. Both peripheral eosinophils and specific IgE data could be joined to FEC in order to identify resistant or susceptible animals. The number of peripheral eosinophils was the only immunological maker that was able to classify high and low FEC ewes in two different groups.
