Genetic association of IDE, POU2F1, PON1, IL1α and IL1β with type 2 diabetes in Pakistani population

Abstract: A number of genes are known to be involved in glucose homeostasis. Mutations and polymorphisms in candidate genes may effect insulin production, action or resistance. This study was designed to report the association of genetic polymorphism with the type 2 diabetes (T2D) in Pakistani population. A total of 458 subjects (case n=288, control n=170) participated in the study. Nine single nucleotide polymorphisms were investigated in genes IDE (rs6583813 C>T, rs7910977 C>T), POU2F1 (rs3767434 A>T, rs10918682 A>T, … Show more

“…POU2F1 was widely expressed in different organs of white and black Rex rabbits, with the highest expression levels in the lungs. POU2F1 has been reported to be involved in carcinogenesis and other disease processes by promoting cell proliferation and metastasis [26], e.g., in type 2 diabetes [15,27], head and neck cancer [28], cervical cancer [19], and liver cancer [29]. The wide involvement of POU2F1 in various kinds of cancer and in the immune response to cancers suggests its general expression in different organs, which was also found in this study.…”

“…Luotola et al (2011) demonstrated that the genetic variations of rs1800587 in the IL-1α gene might have an association with the risk of T2D (Luotola et al, 2011). Batool et al (2014) also reported that rs1800587 was associated with T2D at the haplotype level in a Pakistani population (Batool et al, 2014). In our study, the results indicated an association between the rs1800587 polymorphism in the IL-1α gene with T1D risk.…”

“…With PON1 rs854560, our results show that patients with at least one polymorphic allele had decreased glucose levels at several timepoints following the glycemic load. This polymorphism has been previously associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes and increased risk of cardiovascular complications in diabetic patients [37]. Another meta-analysis found that this polymorphism is significantly associated with diabetic retinopathy [38].…”
