Genetic Diversity Analysis of Lates calcarifer (Bloch 1790) in Captive and Wild Populations Using RAPD Markers

Abstract: Lates calcarifer (Bloch 1790) is one of the major economically important cultivable fish species in India. In this study, three populations of L. calcarifer was selected to assess the genetic diversity. Of which, two wild (Mudaslodai, Muthupettai) and one captive (Mutukadu) population. The genetic diversity of three populations of this species was studied using Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. Ten random primers were used for the assessment of their genetic diversity and construction of the den… Show more

“…Shifat et al (2003) have also reported RAPD Jaccards dissimilarity coefficient in 34 individuals of Tenualosa ilisha and observed 20.41% polymorphism. Rajasekar et al (2012) investigated that the RAPD profile showed 93.12% polymorphic loci among the three populations of Lates calcarifer. The present study inferred from these RAPD data that showed relatively high level (92.10%) of genetic polymorphism and is possibly due to the small sampling size.…”
