Genetic diversity and pathogenicity of Monilinia polystroma – the new pathogen of cherries

Abstract: Brown rot caused by fungi belonging to the genus Monilinia is one of the major limiting factors of sour and sweet cherry production. Up to now, three species, M. fructigena, M. laxa and M. fructicola, have been identified as causal agents of brown rot on cherries worldwide. From 2010 to 2013, during the monitoring of cherry orchards in different areas of Poland, a fourth species, M. polystroma, was isolated from brown rot symptoms on sour and sweet cherry fruits. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is … Show more

“…Contrary to this, Mo. polystroma , which is a cherry pathogen ( Poniatowska et al, 2016 ), was detected only after both fungicide application. In this case, these type of contradictory results made very difficult to establish some clear impact of agronomic treatments on microbial communities of musts.…”

“…A slightly modified method of PCR MP (Masny & Płucienniczak, 2003;Poniatowska et al, 2015) was used for the characterization and differentiation of the isolates. The digestion of 100 ng DNA with NcoI (10 U lL À1 ; Thermo Scientific) was performed overnight at 37°C according to the manufacturer's instructions.…”

“…A similar tendency was observed for M . polystroma strains in the dendrograms constructed on the basis of PCR MP, ISSR, and RAPD results (Poniatowska et al, 2016) and for strains belonging to different Monilinia spp. analysed by using a multigene phylogeny based on g3pdh and tub2 sequences (Yin et al, 2015).…”
