Selection based on yield alone may not be effective for yield improvement in plant breeding programs. Thus, in order to progress the genetic gains during selection, yield should be considered along with potential yield contributing traits. The objective of this study was to improve the genotype of amaranth and increase the effectiveness of selection in the program by identifying the correlation and path coefficients between yield and its relevant attributes. On 120 genotypes of amaranth planted during two growing seasons in 2020 and 2021, the study was carried out using an alpha lattice design with two replications. The results revealed significant positive phenotypic and genotypic associations on leaf yield, with leaf area, leaf breadth, branch number, leaf number, plant height at flowering, and grain yield all having positive direct effects. Similar strong positive phenotypic and genotypic relationships were found for grain yield and grain sink filling rates. Using path coefficient analysis, the direct and indirect effects of yield-related traits on yield were also determined. In addition to having a strong direct impact on grain output, the grain sink filling rates showed both phenotypic and genotypic evidence of substantial positive relationships with grain yield. It was further suggested that leaf yield in amaranth genotypes may increase through the indirect selection of plant height at maturity, leaf length, and terminal inflorescence lateral length, which showed such significant indirect influences, mostly through leaf area, days to maturity, and days to emergence, which displayed such strong indirect effects, primarily through plant height at flowering. This study consequently shows the need for traits with significant positive indirect impacts via leaf area to be considered indirect selection criteria for improving leaf yield in amaranth genotypes. The grain sink filling rate also significantly improved grain yield indirectly at both the phenotypic and genotypic levels, mainly via days to flowering and leaf yield. This demonstrated that selection that mainly targeted days to flowering, leaf yield, and grain sink filling rate would ultimately boost the grain yield in amaranth genotypes.

The present experiment was carried out during summer season 2022-23 in Central Horticulture Research Farm of Department of Horticulture, SHUATS, Prayagraj. The experiment was conducted to evaluate Performance of different varieties of Tinda (Praecitrullus fistulosus) under Prayagraj agro climatic condition. For the evaluation eight varieties treatments were V1-Ludhiana Special, V2- S-48, V3-Raja, V4-Komal, V5-IHS-45, V6-Laddu, V7-Heera, V8-Mahy Tinda are taken for the study in a Randomized Block Design with three replications in 2.5 x 1.5 m plot. The study revealed that the maximum vine length 182.8cm in V5 IHS-45. The number of primary branches was maximum in V5-IHS-45, 6.43 at final harvestings. At harvesting the number of nodes per plant was Maximum in V5-IHS-45, 34.36. Days to first female flower appearance was minimum in IHS45, 26.30. IHS-45 was found to be the best variety for fruit weight with 63.14gm. IHS-45 was found to be the best variety for diameter of fruit with 54.12mm. IHS-45 produced the maximum fruit yield/ha and the fruit yield was 143.66q/ha. Among the different varieties studied, IHS-45 performed best for flower, fruit and yield characters. And the best varieties followed by Laddu and Mahy Tinda. The study revealed that, these varieties of Tinda provide high benefit to the farmers through easy cultivation, better stress tolerance, diseases resistance and higher yield.

Characterization of begomoviruses associated with emerging mosaic disease of ivy gourd (Coccinia grandis L.) in Tamil Nadu, India

A systematic field survey was conducted in ivy gourd fields of Tamil Nadu during the year 2019-2021. The infected plants manifesting prominent chlorosis, mosaic, puckering, and yellow mosaic symptoms on leaves were tested through polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay for the infection of begomoviruses. Amplicons of PCR from 5 samples were sequenced. 4 samples were infected with tomato leaf curl New Delhi virus (ToLCNDV) and one with Coccinia mosaic Tamil Nadu virus (CoMoTNV). The nucleotide sequences from isolates IGT-1 (OR041745) and IGP-1 (OR041746) have an identity of 96-98% with ToLCNDV isolate infecting chrysanthemum (MG758145) from Karnataka. Another isolate IGD-1 (OR041747) had 99.3% identity with tomato infecting ToLCNDV isolate (MW538662) from Raipur and isolate IGE-1 (OR041748) had 98.4% highest identity with the previously reported ToLCNDV isolates of India infecting bitter gourd. The IGS-1 (OR028863) isolate 98.9% identity at the nucleotide level with previously reported CoMoTNV (KY860899) infecting ivy gourd from Tamil Nadu. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that ToLCNDV isolates infecting ivy gourd were grouped under three different clusters reported previously reported from different parts of the globe. The present investigation reports the emergence of begomoviruses (ToLCNDV and CoMoTNV) on ivy gourd growing in different parts of Tamil Nadu.
