Genetic Diversity of Cultivated Lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.) and Its Relation to the World's Agro-ecological Zones

Abstract: Assessment of genetic diversity and population structure of germplasm collections plays a critical role in supporting conservation and crop genetic enhancement strategies. We used a cultivated lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.) collection consisting of 352 accessions originating from 54 diverse countries to estimate genetic diversity and genetic structure using 1194 polymorphic single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers which span the lentil genome. Using principal coordinate analysis, population structure analy… Show more

“…The average PIC value was 0.25, which is consistent with common bean (Souza et al, 2012;Galeano et al, 2012;Blair et al, 2013) but lower than for faba bean (Vicia faba L.) and lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.) (Kaur et al, 2014;Khazaei et al, 2016).…”

“…Molecular markers have proven to be valuable tools in the evaluation of genetic variation both within and between species (Powell et al, 1996). Molecular biology has contributed to the development of DNA-based markers that can be used for genotype identification, fingerprinting, genetic mapping and diversity assessment (Khazaei et al, 2016). On the other hand, ISSRs are DNA-based markers permit detection of polymorphisms in inter-microsatellite loci ( Karaca and Izbirak, 2008).…”

“…Few molecular genetics and genomic resources existed for lentil, partly due to its relatively large genome size (Khazaei et al, 2016). Assessment of genetic diversity of different crop species is appropriate precursor for improvement of the crop because it generates baseline data to guide selection of parental lines.…”
