Genetic evaluation of milking buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis): bull ranking

Abstract: The objective of this study was to evaluate genetic aspects related to production and reproductive efficiency of Murrah and Mediterranean buffaloes and their crosses. A ranking of bulls from Embrapa Eastern Amazonia was also composed to guide assisted mating. Birth records of 2,322 Murrah, Mediterranean, and crossbred buffaloes from the Embrapa Eastern Amazon herd, from 1953 to 2013, as well as information on production and reproductive traits were used. Genetic analyzes were performed in the WOMBAT software u… Show more

“…Since then, the Amazonian buffaloes have been selected to be more productive (Marques et al 2019a), long-lived, and very docile. They have consistently achieved high reproductive and productive efficiency, with a capacity to properly use the available territory and to transform low-quality roughage into products of high aggregated value (Batista et al 1982).…”

“…The reduction in the genetic variability of these populations, in addition to the common origin, is a further point of convergence between the purebred individuals from tropical herds of bovine and buffalo species in Brazil (Marcondes et al, 2014). Since the last importation of animals from India in 1962, both in Brazil and India, breeding animal selection programs have been developed, aiming at genetic improvement to increase milk productivity (Marques et al, 2019), as well as meat quality (Cassiano et al, 2004;Canozzi et al, 2016).…”
