Genetic Features of Reproductive Traits in Bovine and Buffalo: Lessons From Bovine to Buffalo

Abstract: Bovine and buffalo are important livestock species that have contributed to human lives for more than 1000 years. Improving fertility is very important to reduce the cost of production. In the current review, we classified reproductive traits into three categories: ovulation, breeding, and calving related traits. We systematically summarized the heritability estimates, molecular markers, and genomic selection (GS) for reproductive traits of bovine and buffalo. This review aimed to compile the heritability and … Show more

“…Improving fertility is critical for lowering production costs, where the demand for buffalo's meat is increasing recently due to over-growing population. During selection indexes, the reproductive traits including ovulation, mating and calving-related traits were depreciated to increase livestock genetic capacity [16].…”

“…MTNR1A gene's polymorphisms can influence the protein through the impact on the amount of melatonin that affects the amount of prolactin (35). So, the MTNR1A gene's polymorphisms can be considered as a reproductive genetic marker (36,37), and therefor this genetic variation can effectively contribute to the reproductive performance of the Iraqi buffalo (38).…”

“…Reproductive features, particularly in monotocous livestock such as cattle and buffalo, are economically significant for long-term food production [ 1 ]. An extended period between two calvings (repeat breeding), might be regarded as low reproductive capacity or infertility.…”
