This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of some of genetic and non-genetic parameters on the reproductive traits of Friesian cows. The data were obtained from a commercial farm (Gharbawy farm) located in El-Sharkia governorate, Egypt. A total of 1630 records of 465 pure Friesian cows covered the period from 1998 to 2007 were collected. The data values of reproductive traits which include; days open (DO), calving interval (CI) and dry period (DP) were measured. The actual means of DO, CI and DP were 140.47, 432.76 and 93.57days, respectively. Parity, year and season of calving had a significance effect (p≤0.01) on all studied traits. Estimates of direct heritability (h 2 ) for all studied traits were low, with equal h 2 a values (0.02) for both DO and DP, it was 0.04 for CI. Concerning maternal permanent environment, effects were low ranging from 0.0003 to 0.01. Moreover, error variance effects represent the largest proportion of the total variation ranging from 0.96 to 0.98. All coefficients were positive for phenotypic correlations and ranged from 0.388 to 0.746. Moreover, the coefficients of genetic correlations among all studied reproductive traits were positive and ranged from 0.230 to 0.492. Non-genetic factors have a strong influence on the herd under study, which requires the stability of technical and administrative processes to impr ove reproductive performance. Moreover, additional assessment studies required to improve the accuracy of information to increase productivity of such herds.

Background: Genotype environment interaction plays vital role in animal productivity. Heat stress is one of the major environmental stressor affecting milk production and measured in terms of temperature humidity index (THI). Indian milk industry largely depends on crossbred cows bearing different degree of exotic inheritance. Thus, the role of genotype (genetic group) of the crossbred cows and environment (THI) interaction plays vital role in Indian climate which is mostly tropical in nature. Therefore, study was undertaken to examine the existence of genetic group × THI in crossbred dairy cows reared at institute herd of ICAR-National Dairy Research Institute, Eastern Regional Station, Kalyani, West Bengal. Methods: A total of 12364 records each of monthly milk yield (MMY) and average daily milk yield in a month (AMY) of crossbred cows spanned over twenty two years (1994-2015) and weather parameters(temperature and relative humidity) for the corresponding years were collected from institute records. The data were classified into 8 genetic groups according to the genetic composition and 3 THI groups (THI less than 72, THI 72-78 and THI above 78). The interaction model was used to study the G×E interaction study using least squares analysis. Result: Effect of non-genetic factors (parity, period of calving and stage of lactation) was found to be highly significant (P less than 0.01) and genetic group × THI was significant (P less than 0.05) of on both MMY and AMY. Genetic group bearing 50% Jersey and 50% Red Sindhi or Tharparkar were the most heat tolerant breeds. Jersey crossbred cows were more heat tolerant than Holstein crossbred cows. Crossbred cows with 50% Jersey inheritance performed better than higher Jersey inheritance during periods of THI above 72.

The effects of genetic and non genetic factors on performance traits (Daily Milk Yield, 305 Days Milk Yield, Total Milk Yield and Lactation Length) of primiparous Kankrej cows was studied. The least square means of daily milk yield, 305 days milk yield, total milk yield and lactation length were calculated and found 6.71±0.14, 1893.42±60.00, 1983.29±72.47 kg and 290.78±7.33 days, respectively. The season and period of calving did not affect these traits, while effects of sire was significant (*P<0.05) on 305 DMY, but it did not have any effect on the traits such as DMY, TMY and LL of primiparous Kankrej cow. On the basis of these observations, we can suggest that proper management practices as well as use of better sire will help to improve the production performance of the herd.
