In this study, we aimed to identify the patterns of perforation damage on shipwreck members excavated from the Korean coast and to estimate the organisms responsible. Two types of marine borers were collected from driftwood collected from Chupo Beach, Shinchang-ri Beach, and Biin Beach, and test piles installed at Shinjindo Beach, and species identification was conducted through visual observation and DNA analysis. The damage patterns of marine borers on the driftwood and test piles were identified and compared with the damage patterns of the shipwreck members. The marine borers found in the driftwood and test piles were identified as Teredo navalis and Limnoria lignorum through DNA analysis and visual observation. T. navalis bored 3-5 mm diameter tunnels in the cross-section of the wood towards the fiber direction, and the damage was severe enough to completely penetrate a 7 cm long piece of wood. The tunnels were lined with calcareous material extruded by T. navalis. In some driftwood, fiber-oriented as well as random-directional tunnels were observed in T. navalis damage scars. In shipwreck members, T. navalis damage was primarily seen in the upper members, which were exposed to seawater and not buried in mud on the shore at the time of excavation, where L. lignorum drilled and gnawed small holes of less than 1 mm diameter in the surface of the wood. Very little evidence of damage by L. lignorum was rarely observed on the topsides of shipwrecks or on the surfaces of members, presumably because the fragile damage was worn away by the movement of currents at sea.

T. navalis has high reproducibility and is widely distributed according to physiological tolerance and conditional factors. The purpose of this study was to analyze the growth and condition factors of Teredo navalis Linnaeus 1758 in the mangrove root habitat of Avicennia sp. This type of research is a case study, using the purposive sampling method. Data collection was carried out at two research stations, starting with determining the roots and stems of Avicennia sp mangroves in 70 cm pieces, then observing growth and taking samples. The results showed that the growth of T. navalis in the root habitat of Avicennia sp at treatment S1 (7‰) was 9.96±0.06 gr and the highest at treatment S3 (21‰) was 18.20±0.02 gr. salinity and absolute weight growth of T. navalis with a quadratic pattern with the equation Y = 0.1524x+11.345 R2 = 0.1506, and the optimum point of salinity of 14‰ media can produce maximum absolute weight growth of T.navalis (Y) = 15.33 gr. The results of the calculation of the value of the condition factor (FK) on the relationship between length and weight of T. navalis in the root habitat of Avicennia sp W = 26.29 + 0.39x. Based on the graph of the relationship between length and weight, the value of Y = 00338x2 + 1.8421 + 57,115 and R2 = 0.5834.

Environmental gradients have emerged as important barriers to structuring populations and species distributions. We set out to test whether the strong salinity gradient from the marine North Sea to the brackish Baltic Sea in northern Europe represents an ecological and genetic break, and to identify life history traits that correlate with the strength of this break. We accumulated mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 sequence data, and data on the distribution, salinity tolerance, and life history for 28 species belonging to the Cnidaria, Crustacea, Echinodermata, Mollusca, Polychaeta, and Gastrotricha. We included seven non‐native species covering a broad range of times since introduction, in order to gain insight into the pace of adaptation and differentiation. We calculated measures of genetic diversity and differentiation across the environmental gradient, coalescent times, and migration rates between North and Baltic Sea populations, and analyzed correlations between genetic and life history data. The majority of investigated species is either genetically differentiated and/or adapted to the lower salinity conditions of the Baltic Sea. Species exhibiting population structure have a range of patterns of genetic diversity in comparison with the North Sea, from lower in the Baltic Sea to higher in the Baltic Sea, or equally diverse in North and Baltic Sea. Two of the non‐native species showed signs of genetic differentiation, their times since introduction to the Baltic Sea being about 80 and >700 years, respectively. Our results indicate that the transition from North Sea to Baltic Sea represents a genetic and ecological break: The diversity of genetic patterns points toward independent trajectories in the Baltic compared with the North Sea, and ecological differences with regard to salinity tolerance are common. The North Sea–Baltic Sea region provides a unique setting to study evolutionary adaptation during colonization processes at different stages by jointly considering native and non‐native species.
