Baculoviruses, members of the family Baculoviridae, are large, enveloped viruses that contain a doublestranded circular DNA genome of 80-180 kbp, encoding 90-180 putative proteins. These viruses are exclusively pathogenic for arthropods, particularly insects, and have been developed, or are being developed, as environmentally sound pesticides and eukaryotic vectors for foreign protein expression, surface display, gene delivery for gene therapy, vaccine production and drug screening. The baculoviruses contain a set of approximately 30 core genes that are conserved among all baculovirus genomes sequenced to date. Individual baculoviruses also contain a number of lineage-or species-specific genes that have greatly impacted the diversification and evolution of baculoviruses. In this review, we first describe the general properties and biology of baculoviruses and then focus on the baculovirus genes and mechanisms involved in the replication, spread and survival of baculoviruses within the context of their diversity, evolution and insect manipulation.

Sericultural production is seriously influenced by the blood pathogens of grasserie, Bombyx mori nucleopolyhedrovirus (BmNPV). To investigate the infectious condition and define an effective control method for BmNPV. 233 from 240 suspected samples infected with BmNPV were detected using PCR identification. One sample was selected from each county in the positive sample collection area, 56 isolates of which were used as experimental objects. The homology of the bro-d nucleotide sequence was at least 91% among the 56 BmNPV isolates. However, the conserved 7 amino acids (percentage of amino acid constant sites, PAACS) at the position 217-224 were absent for YNQJLL001 and YNZTQJ074 pandemic isolates. Phylogenetic tree analysis of bro-d gene separated the BmNPV isolates from Yunnan into 4 main clades: I, II, III, and IV. Clade I was the dominant clade containing 32 local epidemic isolates. Clades II, III, and IV contained 5, 16, and 3 pandemic isolates, respectively. Geographical distribution of clade I in Yunnan showed a concentrated pattern, while the remaining members of the other three clades depicted no direct contact in relation to their locations. This study may provide valuable molecular types on BmNPV isolate distribution in the silkworm-raising regions, also be helpful for evaluating BmNPV pathogenesis and epidemic situations in the Yunnan sericulture region.

Research in host-parasite evolutionary ecology has demonstrated that environmental variation plays a large role in mediating the outcome of parasite infection. For example, crowding or low food availability can reduce host condition and make them more vulnerable to parasite infection. This observation that poor-condition hosts often suffer more from parasite infection compared to healthy hosts has led to the assumption that parasite productivity is higher in poor-condition hosts. However, the ubiquity of this negative relationship between host condition and parasite fitness is unknown. Moreover, examining the effect of environmental variation on parasite fitness has been largely overlooked in the host-parasite literature. Here we investigate the relationship between parasite fitness and host condition by using a laboratory experiment with the cabbage looper Trichoplusia ni and its viral pathogen, AcMNPV, and by surveying published host-parasite literature. Our experiments demonstrated that virus productivity was positively correlated with host food availability and the literature survey revealed both positive and negative relationships between host condition and parasite fitness. Together these data demonstrate that contrary to previous assumptions, parasite fitness can be positively or negatively correlated with host fitness. We discuss the significance of these findings for host-parasite population biology.
