Bread wheat (Triticum aestivum) is the most commonly grown crop due to its adaptation in a wide range of ecogeographical conditions and providing enhanced food assurance to the modern world. A diverse and rich collection is the foundation of each successful wheat improvement program. Therefore, major efforts are in progress worldwide to boost wheat production by broadening genetic diversity. Accepting this issue as a target, present study gives an overview of the major progress in the diversity and population evaluation of Indian and Turkish hexaploid wheat employing ISSR and RAPD primers. Various statistical analyses were employed for determining the hexaploid wheat population structure of India and Turkey. Results of dendrogram, scatterplots, Analysis of Molecular Variance (AMOVA) and population structure analysis were found in accordance with each other. All the experimental genotypes were clustered in two main groups, one group containing Indian varieties and another group containing both Indian and Turkish varieties reflecting the direct or indirect interbreeding among the populations of the two countries. Utilizing the genetic association of Indian and Turkish hexaploid wheat population, based on genetic distance estimated in the study, researchers worldwide may include Indian and Turkish hexaploid varieties in the wheat improvement programs and can evade the likelihood of selected germplasm becoming hereditarily consistent.

The purpose of the study was to evaluate the relationship between the genetic distances (GD) and phenotypic distances (PD) of parents and the specific combining ability (SCA) and heterosis effects. The experiment comprised 18 parental genotypes of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and 76 F 2 hybrids, obtained after crossing in a line 9 tester scheme. Parents and hybrids were examined in a field experiment conducted in a block design with three replications. SCA as well as mid-parent heterosis effects were estimated for selected morphological and technological traits. PDs and GDs were investigated between pairs of parental genotypes. GD between parental genotypes was evaluated by using randomly amplified polymorphic DNA markers. Heterosis was observed in all hybrids, and protein content exhibited the highest heterosis among the seven examined traits. The relationship between PD and GD as well as the SCA and mid-parent heterosis effects were evaluated using correlation coefficient. The correlation between PD, SCA and heterosis were low and not significant for the examined traits, whereas the correlation between SCA, heterosis and GDs were significant for protein content and rheological properties. The results indicate that GDs between parents can be used to predict performance of hybrids for selected technological traits.

Assessment of genetic diversity among India Ginseng, Withania somnifera (L) Dunal using RAPD and ISSR markers

Withania somnifera is commonly known as Indian Ginseng or Ashwagandha which is listed highly medicinal plant in Ayurveda for its wide range of medicinal use. Genetic diversity among 16 genotypes of Withania somnifera collected from four different regions viz. Lucknow, Nimuch, Karnataka and Mumbai was studied using RAPD and ISSR techniques. The ISSR and RAPD together produced 89 bands across 16 genotypes of W. somnifera of which 39 were polymorphic showing 47.89% polymorphism. Over 99% of the RAPD and ISSR fragments were reproducible in the present experiment. There was 90% uniformity within the population. The neighbor joining tree also confirmed a clear grouping and differentiation based on populations of origin i.e. samples were grouped on the basis of their regions of origin. The dendrogram reveals that outgroup of W. somnifera Karnataka origin are evolutionarily related to W. somnifera Nimuch group varieties and W. somnifera Lucknow and Mumbai group varieties are evolutionarily closely related. Within population analysis of Lucknow and Nimuch location showed two sub groups of two lines each showing slight diversity. Plants from Karnataka and Mumbai region show less diversity within population.
