Genetic Variation of Strawberry Fusarium Wilt Pathogen Population in Korea

Abstract: Strawberries are a popular economic crop, and one of the major plantations and exporting countries is Korea in the world. The Fusarium oxysporum species complex (FOSC) is a soil-borne pathogen with genetic diversity, resulting in wilt disease in various crops. In Korea, strawberries wilt disease was first reported in the 1980s due to the infection of FOSC, causing significant economic damage every year. The causal agent, F. oxysporum f. sp. fragariae … Show more

“…Therefore, the consumption of strawberries, either fresh or processed, continues to significantly increase, with the market surging every year [ 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 ]. Strawberry is one of the most widely grown crops in South Korea, which is a major strawberry-producing country alongside Poland, Mexico, Egypt, Turkey, Spain, and the United States [ 6 , 7 ]. Based on the Korean Statistical Information Service (KOSIS), domestic strawberries generated approximately KRW 1.3 trillion in 2018 [ 8 ].…”

“…Strawberries ( Fragaria × ananassa ) are a widely cultivated fruit with high nutritional and economic value [ 13 , 14 ]. Because of the continuous expansion of strawberry plantation areas and the use of long-term continuous cropping, strawberries have become susceptible to several diseases, such as Fusarium wilt [ 15 , 16 ]. Fusarium wilt is caused by a soil-borne pathogen called Fusarium oxysporum , which primarily infects plants such as strawberry, cucumber, tomato, banana, and celery; has a wide range of hosts; and results in major crop losses in fruits and vegetables worldwide [ 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 ].…”
