Genetic Variations of Chicken MC1R Gene and Associations with Feather Color of Korean Native Chicken (KNC) 'Woorimatdag'

Abstract: There are several loci controlling the feather color of birds, of which one of the most studied is Extended black (E) encoding the melanocortin 1-receptor (MC1R). Mutations in this gene affect the relative distribution of eumelanin, phaeomelanin. The association of feather color and sequence polymorphism in the melanocortin 1-receptor (MC1R) gene was investigated using Korean native chicken H breed (H_PL) and 'Woorimatdag' commercial chickens (Woorimatdag_CC). In order to correlate gene mutation to Korean nati… Show more

“…For black chickens, it has been confirmed that there is a genetic variation of MC1R, but it has been difficult to confirm the variation of MC1R between red and yellow-red chickens. Our results were slightly different from the findings of Park et al, 2013; thus, many other genetic specificities in addition to MC1R mutation might exist. The results obtained varied considerably from the results of conventional MS typing for the red and yellow-red lines (Choi et al, 2012).…”

“…Traditional methods to identify chicken breeds focused on general appearances such as feather color, shank color, and body type [ 6 ]. Because of the process of distribution and market, chicken breeds cannot be effectively classified based on the appearance of meat.…”
